Reflection:



Story “Youth” by Joseph Conrad is talks about five men who are veterans of the merchant navy , sitting around the table in the bar and drinking, one of them who known as Marlow speaks of his first voyage to the east with an old boat “Judea” that lead by the captain John Beard, through his 2 year experience on this journey the ship commissioned to take coal from England to Thailand, Bangkok. He explained while a ship was going to load the coals its suffers from the moving aside of the ballasts which the crew put the things right again. So after a month ship anchored to load coals, while it was ready to leave its hit by a steamer and stayed two weeks there for repair then while it was travelling through the north sea faced with a storm which “guts” the ship and make it to stay for six months then after the ship got repaired again while on the way to coast western of Australia, the cargo impulsively catch fire, the crew try to smother the fire the vassal explode and blow up the deck which he described he hurled into air and falls to burning deck, so the captain decide to leave the ship there and with the three small boats they arrived to java port.


My observation from this story is the author is wants to show the youth relation to life and romance of youth which they somehow disillusioning it , explain the aspect of human life and behaviour like idealism vs realism which a youth like Marlow had experienced grandeur and excitement,through his voyage which was obviously a disaster like all the delays difficulties and the frustrations also the ship was a understandable aspect to him about life that all the flame in the youth will be smooth by the time like the ship that drowned and never arrived to its destination,Marlow never reached his youthful dreams, the ship was symbolized as a difficulties in the life and wants to show all the hardness and the courage that ordinary people will face and also wonder that life could seem like fun.
the ship also symbolize as his youth which burn down and gone so its become a mature person.
